Obesity goes beyond just looks and eating habits. It runs deeper into health and obese children can be at risk of various diseases.

Here are some of the diseases obese children are at risk of;

High Cholesterol – Children may have high levels of cholesterol, which can cause other health problems, especially problems with heart disease when the child gets older.

Too much cholesterol leads to the build-up of plaque on the walls of the arteries, which supply blood to the heart and other organs. Plaque can narrow the arteries and block the blood flow to the heart, causing heart problems.

Diabetes – Type 2 diabetes, this condition is most commonly seen in adults, it is now also being diagnosed in children.

Sleep Apnoea – This is a condition that causes difficulty breathing when sleeping. It also causes snoring, waking often and poor sleep. It makes people feel tired and contributes to poor concentration during the day

Respiratory disorders, such as blocked airways and restrictions in the chest wall, which cause breathlessness during exercise.
